A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE MINISTRY IN AFRICA:

Pastors and Missionaries to the Poor and the Orphans: Desi and Martha Jakab

have been working in Malawi since July 2000 when they went as volunteers to help set up a school for the orphans. Today the government of Malawi has recognized the school they helped to start as one of the best private schools in all of Malawi. Both Primary and Seconday Schools have been built in a remote area of Malawi. Desi and Martha are so thankful for the very primitive beginnings "When we had to work without electricity the first 3 years, and also the only blackboard we had was a very thin piece of plywood painted black and hung on the wall with corn veavals chomping on the sacks of maise in one end of the class-room."

In 2005 (seven years ago) God redirected Desi and Martha to go to an area they had never been to. The result of this vision and dream divinely given by God has resulted in a Medical Facility built in an area that never had anything, and helping many orphans and poor widows in both Malawi and also in Mozambique.

Flash Flood Disaster in Malawi ( OUR SUPPORT)

January 21, 2012 Flash Flood Disaster in Malawi

January 21, 2012 Flash Flood Disaster in Malawi

Tens of thousands of people have fled their homes to escape floodwaters in south Malawi due to heavy rains from a deadly cyclones and heavy rains that is battering neighbouring Mozambique, authorities said on Wednesday.
Army helicopters and motorboats were deployed to the south district of Nsanje, along the Mozambican border, to rescue marooned villagers.
Nsanje has been "receiving heavy rains since mid-last week which has resulted in two big rivers to break their banks and flood scores of villages", district commissioner Rodney Simwaka said by telephone.
The Shire River, which flows out of Lake Malawi, and the Ruo, which originates from the picturesque Mulanje Mountain, have flooded following heavy rains caused by Cyclone Funso, a powerful category four storm moving slowly through the Mozambican Channel.
Simwaka said about thousands of people from villages fled to hills when the floods hit homes along the rivers.
"Thousands of people are still marooned in dry patches of land in the flooded villages," he said.
Roads and bridges leading to Nsanje, 175km from the commercial capital Blantyre, had been washed away, cutting off scores of villages.
He said the helicopter and engine boat operation to rescue the villagers started on Tuesday. Hundreds of 99 villagers have been flown to safety and were being housed in schools and churches where the government was distributing food and relief items.
Number of deaths are not known, but hundreds of hectares of the maize fields were under water and scores of cattle, goats and chickens had been washed away. Please ensure you designate your gifts for "Malawi Flood Relief" on the memo line of your cheque to Feeding the Hungry Global Ministries OR Please Go on Line to www.feedingthehungry.ca

www.feedingthehungry.ca The flooding has been much worse than earlier predicted.

After a prolonged period of insufficient rain farmers needed for the crops to survive, a powerful storm delivered 115mm of rain within a period of only 90 minutes over Bangula late Thursday afternoon. The immense volume of rain caused havoc throughout the villages. The depth of water streaming through the Bangula market area was over 4’, crashing through shops, destroying merchandise, and collapsing buildings. The devastation for people in the villages was worse.

A letter from a ministry friend in the area:

"Yesterday the District Commissioner visited and reported to the President’s Office declaring a disaster. There has been much infrastructure damage. The only highway south out of Bangula has been severed by the destructive flood water which has now cut off the lower part of the district from the rest of Malawi .
Bangula has struggled with food insecurity this season and there is currently an outbreak of cholera. This natural disaster will only compound the vulnerable and insecure conditions already experienced by the people.
Yesterday morning we surveyed the damage and were overwhelmed. We saw at least 150 homes that were completely destroyed in a village called Tambo in central Bangula. Families were picking through the rubble, searching for cups, plates, bottles, whatever they could salvage. Thankfully no deaths or missing persons have been reported but many complain about the loss of their chickens and goats that were carried away in the floods.     Another 55 mm of rain has since fallen, hindering clean-up efforts. The damage assessment continues and the numbers of people who have lost their homes continues to rise. Some estimate it could be as many as 400-500 homes destroyed. People have taken refuge with relatives but the majority have moved into the local primary school classrooms.
Yesterday afternoon we deployed our pastor students from the Bible school along with missionaries to help deliver food and clothing to families. We went from rubble to rubble, sharing our sympathies and prayers, and distributing rice meal packages in order to sustain them for the day. However, the need is so great and we have emptied the little margin of relief food and materials that we had left in the containers.
People desperately need food, blankets, soap, cups, plates, buckets, and cooking pots now. We ask for your prayers and urgent help for us here. Our challenging season just got tougher."
